21st International Handbell Symposium in Japan

The International Handbell Symposium in Japan was nothing short of spectacular! For some, it was their first time experiencing a symposium outside the UK, and they described Japan as a wonderfully unique place—though they quickly discovered just how hot and humid it can get! Team HRGB SE had been diligently preparing long before the event to ensure they put on a fantastic performance. And they absolutely did!

Everyone loved and seemed interested in our Whitechapel bells—the only team at the symposium ringing on these iconic bells. With over 700 handbell ringers in attendance, this uniqueness made them a fun talking point, drawing attention from other teams eager to try them out.

A particularly special moment came during the opening ceremony when Helen Secker had the great honour of carrying the flag for the UK. Though she noted that the flag was surprisingly heavy, Helen kept her cool and concentrated hard, making sure not to trip (though we’re sure the thought crossed her mind!).

The symposium wasn't just about performing, though—it was a whirlwind of workshops and cultural activities. Mornings were packed with rehearsals, where teams worked hard on nine pieces, with barely enough time for a 15-minute comfort break. But the afternoons brought a variety of workshops, from playing music inspired by Korean and Ghibli festivals to Cantopop tunes. There were also plenty of opportunities to embrace Japanese culture, with participants trying their hand at Chinese paper cutting, creating beautiful origami wreaths with Hinari dolls, and crafting Tsumami Zaiku—upcycling old kimono fabric into intricate sewn flower brooches.

The combination of hard work, cultural immersion, and musical exchange made for an unforgettable experience. Team HRGB SE had an incredible time in Japan, and we will looking forward to sharing more write-ups and photos from the event soon.
