Cottage Chimes
Southampton, Hampshire
Cottage Chimes was started by Wyn Barnes, in January 1990, when six players met in Wyn's cottage, to play Malmark Hand Chimes.
By 1996, several new players had joined and gradually, others from the original group, left but happily, Wyn still plays regularly with us.
In 1999, after much fund raising, a basic set of Whitechapel Bells was bought, to which we have added eleven more bells, as money became available.
Cottage Chimes, in 2007, has more members. However, one has been unable to play this year and two others have many other commitments, so we give concerts with six or seven ringers.
Except for one member, we are all retired. We practise every Wednesday morning and give about forty concerts a year, to audiences ranging in numbers, from twelve to ninety. We don't play in the evenings or at week-ends. We travel many miles to our different venues. We have many repeat requests, and play in Lymington, Totton, Romsey, Southampton, Portsmouth, Alton and other places.
We usually include one or two hymns in our repertoire, arrangements of a few classical pieces, several folk tunes and three rousing pieces at the end, with which people in the audience, join in enthusiastically with percussion.
